1930 MercedesBenz Count Trossi SSK roadster ‘Black Prince’ Amazing Cars


The chassis with serial number 36038 was shipped to Japan in the spring of 1930, most likely to showcase Mercedes-Benz' engineering capabilities. It returned to Europe a few months later and was sold through the Italian agent in Rome to the car's first customer. Still without a body, the SSK was shortly after purchased by the Count Carlo Felice.

Carlo Felice Trossi, an Italian nobleman who raced as a gentleman driver in the 1930s demonstrating great talent, was rich and passionate but decidedly unlucky. At just 41 years old, shortly after winning the Italian and Swiss Grand Prix for Alfa Romeo, he died of cancer leaving memories and regrets.

Carlo Trossi knew his automobiles and was even an initial investor in Scuderia Ferrari, having become the team president for a brief period in 1932. The Count bought the car in June 1933 after it had raced in several events during December 1930 and 1933. It was during his ownership that the "Count Trossi" was given its iconic bodywork.
